In a big turnaround from the 2008 election where Virginia went for Obama big, the Republicans swept the night. Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General all took almost 60% of the vote in a big night for the GOP.
The state had been trending purple in the most recent elections but tonight was a pure red showing. This could have an impact on 2010, but the real news will be from New Jersey and New York where Chris Christie battles incumbent Democrat John Corzine and in New York where Conservative Doug Hoffman takes on liberal democrat Bill Owens. If those two races go Republican and Conservative, it could mean a big 2010 for the Republicans and a major setback to president Obama’s plans.
NOTE: As of right now, Chris Christie is leading in New Jersey 55%-38%, but enough results aren’t in to make a prediction. More posts to come as results come in.
